Family Background

My name is Chen, Guan-Ling.    As my mother's only daughter, I am a bit quiet.  For I was born in a single parent family, I lived in Grandmother’s house for my childhood.  Yet, my mother worked on her own to raise me; as a result, she didn’t have enough time to accompany me; then, I was taken care of by my aunt. 
My aunt was a strict person; hence, I was asked to be a person with dignity.  Notwithstanding her rigor, she wouldn’t oppress me.  As a little girl, I was always afraid of making mistakes, for I thought I would definitely be scolded after she perceived my fault; to my surprise, she didn’t just blame me for what I did; instead, she taught me something meaningful.  That is, it’s well-mannered that a person should apologize when doing something wrong.  Also, as the person receives someone’s aid, he or she must say thank you to whoever assists him or her.  Though I felt awkward at first, now I won’t feel uncomfortable any more.  Fortunately, now I am courteous to everyone under such instruction.

School Life

     I studied at Department of Applied Foreign Languages in National Tainan Commercial Vocational Senior High School (NTCVS).  When I was a junior high school student, I was confident of my English ability, and yet, my mindset had changed a lot since I turned into a senior high school student.  As a high school student, I learned that the more I study, the better I will realize how much I still leave to be desired.  As a consequence, I did my utmost to be a studious learner, and examined my English ability in several tests, such as General English Proficiency Test (GEPT) for the intermediate level, Level 2 of the test of English ability Association, and an online oral contest called my English Tutor (my ET), etc.

     Apart from the certificates I attained, what I had learned from the tests was also important.  Actually, not only my English reading ability was improved to some extent, but I also learned a lot of experience of test skills.  Moreover, my oral speaking ability in English was improving through my ET as well.  Nevertheless, in addition to my ET, the listening and speaking course at school once every week is also a good opportunity to help me master speaking English.  With various chances to practice speaking English to everyone onstage, I also have the guts to talk over everything with my peers now.

     As for clubs, I have been in the school novel writing and studying club since I was a freshman.  For my interest in writing and reading novel, I have never changed my club since then.  Partaking in this club not only helped me keep in touch with popular novels, but I can also compose my works and discussed them with the associators of the club.  What’s more, I even issued my novel on club’s publications; that was such a special experience that I would never let it slip my mind.

Self-Evaluation

     Since I was in junior high school, I have fostered my interest in writing novel with my peers; my writing style turned from whodunits to romances and finally I wrote fantasy novels.  Though I felt bushed as my first composing, yet I don’t have this kind of feeling now since I have embarked on them for four years or so.  When I was composing, I’d immerse myself in the plot and the characters I created.  Nonetheless, that was not only the attitude I held toward composing, but it was my attitude toward everything I did and studying alike.  What’s more, as I set a high standard for myself, I’ll modify my works once and once again.  Perhaps that’s some kind of expression of my personal traits; I do almost everything in this way.

     Also, in the meanwhile, I developed my interest in drawing pictures on computer, and I liked design as well.  I even set a blog to post the pictures I designed; yet, I faced some obstacles.  That is, I found a person copying my design concept.  Frankly speaking, I felt extremely angry as I saw that, but after several days’ thinking, I realized that the person could steal my photos, but she couldn’t embezzle the concept; she would just be a copycat for good.  Telling it to myself, I felt much better.  From this experience, I have learned something about my mindset.

     Well goes a saying that if you don’t like something, change it; if you can’t change it, change your attitude.  From that moment on, I know that the world will be thoroughly different as long as I hold different attitude toward it.

Future Perspectives

     In the near future, I’ll choose English as my major in college.  The reason is not as skin deep as that I had spent lots of time on English.  Instead, that is because of my interest in English.  I’m convinced that learning what I’m in favor of is the best and efficient way to improve it even though it is still so far for me to master English.  What I am confident of is not the progress that will certainly be made if I can be admitted to your university, but the effort I’ll definitely make in the future.

     For me, the most important thing is my mindset and I am absolutely able to attain whatever goal I set up as long as I hold the creed that “If you don’t like something, change it; if you can’t change it, change your attitude.”  Perhaps there are still so many challenges in my way that I cannot foresee; I will be well-prepared and positive about them at all time.  After all, attitude is everything.

Conclusion

With the creed I hold, I'm convinced that I will definitely make progress in every aspect of English.  In the long run, I hope I can be given a chance to prove that I can make it.

I am Toa. My English name is Angela. I am 17 years old. I am from Taipei First Girls’ High School. I come from a well-to-do family. My mother passed away when I was in my first junior high year. My father is a computer engineer who remarried again three years ago. My grandparents live with us as well. My family manages to get along pretty well.

Throughout my school years, my academic results have always been pretty good expected in second half of first year and first half of the second year, because my mother’s death was such an anguish to me. It took me more than a year to get better. My father was afraid that I would turn bad after that. So he encouraged me to join many extra-curriculum activities. He sent me to piano class, ballet class and art class.
His purpose was to see that through music and art, I would find a way to let my pain go so that my heart would be comforted and my pain would ease away. I am very grateful to my father’s caring and thoughtful consideration. Since then music has been my spiritual guide, gradually becoming my most intimate companion.

In my high school years, I have taken any chance to participate in school activities. I join the chorus and jazz club, and participate in plenty of contests and performing for many occasions. We have won many contests and had been invited by city mayor to perform in the city hall. I am also the, member of art club, I enjoy sketch and painting very much.
Every time when I have chance I would go to Music Theater to listen to symphony and orchestra performance. There’s not once I would not be moved by the music. I really admire those musicians’ talent, passion and dedication to music. I wish one day I would be able to become one of them, performing on the stage and touring around the world. That’s my passion and expectation to myself, wish you would give me a chance to fulfill it.

I am Lin. Sophia is my English name. I am 18 years old, studying in a public girls’ high school. I come from a very happy middle class family. My father works in a bank and my mother works in a bookstore. I am not the so-called spoiled child. My parents make very sure of that by training me to be independent.

Throughout my academic career I have not only gotten good grades but also been very active on sport field and have involved in various societies. I play volleyball and enjoy the team spirit we have. I have joined the drama club and participated in many English speech contests. I really enjoy participating in school activities. I not only made many friends, but also gained many different valuable experiences.

I have been the class English tutor for almost three years. I like to discuss and share the experience of learning English with people a lot. We often read “China Post” and ”Time Magazine” and discuss the content, the word usage and practice speaking English by discussing the articles we have read. At the beginning we found it was quiet hard because we could rarely understand the content but we encouraged each other not to give up. Gradually we had made improvement, we were so excited by it that the group discussion of English books and magazines became one of the most enjoyable things for us every week. I have won the first prize of school English speech contest in second year of high school and many of my English speech contests in my second year of high school and many of my English articles were put on “Students Post.”

My fondness for English is developed from my childhood. It’s lonely to be the only child. I had no one to play with when I was a kid. My mom knew this so she took me with her all the time. Hence bookstores became my playground and books have been my playmates since I was young. My mom would show me those fancy books with cute illustrations on it. Firstly I was drawn by the pictures and then I was curious about these strange symbols called words. That was my first contact with English. As I was interested what those symbol meant, my parents taught me a bit. As they felt that I was eager to learn, they found me an English tutor. Thanks to my parents got the advantage of learning English by starting it at really early age.

My interest in English brought me to the world of English literature. I have been enchanted by this creative world since then, so I decide to major in English literature. My aim is to explore the world of literature and the world of great writers, to open my eyes and cultivate my mind through this great world of literature.

Besides English literature, I also have a wide range of hobbies. I love reading, Writing, music and movies. I have my active side as well, I enjoy swimming, hiking, raveling and going to the nature a lot. I believe we must have balance in our lives, As to my personality. I am creative, optimistic, determined, willing to help others and down to earth.
I want to be one of the literature students who have the privilege of studying great writers’ work and exploring their inner world, their outlook of life and their role as learned scholars and their influence on the world. Several decades ago, some scientists perceived that global warming, mainly caused by carbon dioxide and usually leading to high temperature, had come into being; notwithstanding the hint, they denied the reminder and still devastated the earth, causing the "global warming" to turn into the "global warning."  Yet, at that time, most people considered it an insignificancy and missed the best time to rescue our globe which was asking for help.  Hence, its impacts on our lives deteriorate now and we should do something to salvage our precious earth.  At the beginning, global warming will lead to awful climate; for instance, high temperature may result in the widespread tropical infections that can make several inhabitants fall ill and even decease.  Secondly, it may precipitate the propagation of animals or vegetation; consequently, the biodiversity is going to be threatened as well.  Moreover, the high temperature not only accelerates the desertification but makes it possible to expand unscrupulously.  In addition, global warming conjures images of rising seas; thus, some islands will be threatened that they may be submerged.  As a result, as the "global warming" turns into the "global warning", we cannot neglect it anymore just because its effects on our lives are definitely self-evident.

In 1999, after a group of collegians in Northwestern University vindicated another student's innocence, the matter triggered the discussion over the death penalty in America.  Yet, I support that the penalty should exist for these wherefores below.  First of all, since some people may consider it brutal to deprive a person of his life even though he might be a criminal, I hold that it serves him right; in my view, a convict should think of the consequence just before he does something illegal, and once he does it, he has to shoulder the penalty instead of shirking the punishment against laws protecting human rights.  Secondly, as long as the death penalty is abolished, the whole society must be in a state of chaos; those who commit crimes will never be afraid of the coming of the retribution.  Also, I am of the opinion that if the death sentence exists, the public will definitely live in peace and happiness without worrying about the misfortune's happening to them.  In light of all the points mentioned, it is undeniable that the existence of the death penalty is dominant to a certain extent.

On a Saturday morning, a genial sunbeam brightened my hair as well as my black patent leather bag to vividness; I thought it would certainly be a nice day for me.  As I was rambling around the railway station to wait for my cousin, I met an old lady, whose hair was a little messy, peddling tissue paper along the street in a hoarse voice.  However, plenty of people passed by the granny, but no one intended to halt.  I watched all the comings and goings.  Afterward, I stayed beside her; she looked at me appreciatively.  After a few talks, I knew that she had lived alone for several years, and that she had to support herself even though the painstaking livelihood had tortured her for long.  Hence, I decided to buy all the tissue paper she sold, and wanted her to return home for a rest.  To my surprise, she smiled broadly at me, and she said that I was such a nice person who was willing to help an old lady.  On seeing her satisfaction expressed on her face, I was infatuated in the sparkling smile.  At that moment, I realized the essence of unforgettable memory lay in achieving the real happiness of the inner life.

Opening a large factory may be somewhat difficult, for plenty of opposite effects will be primary issues in the country or perhaps in the local community.  When it comes to the positive ones, it is undeniable that more jobs will be provided and fewer the unemployed are going to be seen.  Having a stable salary, the gap between the rich and the poor in the same country will be narrowed; hence, the economy of the city may develop.  On the other hand, abundant pollution is another effect, such as water pollution, air pollution, and noise pollution.  Take water pollution for instance, the vegetables or some fruits we have may be tainted; our health system will collapse due to the fatal contamination.  Since Acton is a safe, quiet, and clean place, which is just like Arcadia, even little pollution will destroy its nature beauty, and that's why some people concerned about this negative effect.  In the long run, with the consequences of opening a factory, the incident influences should be absolutely paid attention to without a doubt.

It is not always easy for a person to run his or her own business; one can fail if he or she is not careful enough in plenty of ways, and Michael Williams is no exception.  He was a person who opened a small music store on September 5, and went into the bankrupt on December 19.  Several components of the store will be analyzed now in order to find out what led to his failure.  To begin with, the CDs he sold were only hip-hop and rock; compared with the two large music stores in a shopping center, William's store was eclipsed, and that was the main wherefore of his failure.  Secondly, Mr. William's shop was opened Monday to Friday from 1 to 5 since it was reported that the available time of the inhabitants there didn't match the time his store opened; it might be a cause, too.  Furthermore, he wouldn't accept checks or credit cards; that is, he accepted cash only.  That might be bothersome for purchasers to pay their bills, and was likely to send his customers away.  Also, the residents there tended to be aging population, and the CD types William sold wouldn't meet their needs exactly.  In the long run, these points above were the possible wherefores that caused the collapse of Michael William's business, and they would absolutely be mirrors for those who intended to run their own business.

When it comes to physical condition, a normal teenager should be healthy theoretically, and yet, I was once the exception as I was a junior high school pupil.  In the student medical checkup, I was diagnosed with scoliosis; hence, I had to make a decision if I should undergo an operation or not.  On hearing the awful news, I just couldn't imagine it initially; however, what I had to do was not hesitate but determine as soon as I could because procrastination might make the situation worsen.  Actually, I didn't face the truth at first, and even sought another way to cure my illness, which caused ghastly deterioration.  After all, I was so young that undergoing an operation was definitely dreadful.  However, at the prospect of operation, I wanted to flee, and yet, I started to think about it and accepted it ultimately, for my illness wouldn't improve if I kept evading.  As a result, I couldn't help but undergo a spinal surgery as I was a fifteen-year-old teenager.  During the seven days in the hospital, I felt extremely torturous as I couldn't sleep well; notwithstanding the terrible ache in my spine, I got it over.  After I was released from the hospital, I felt the unprecedented relief on thinking about what decision I had made which led to the improvement of my spinal disease.  From then on, I wouldn't have to worry about the terrible consequences of my uncommon illness.

As collegians, people don't have to wear uniforms; instead, they wear whatever they are in favor of.  For my part, I think it is nice to wear a uniform due to several wherefores.  First, people who are in uniforms look neat and regulated.  Second, they are also the symbols of one's spirit and impression. Moreover, as they have an outing, it would be much more visible in a heavy crowd.  In addition, some uniforms are smashing since they are customized and ingenious.  In the long run, the practice of wearing a uniform is absolutely an excellent system without a doubt.
